This role includes full support of our Actuarial Model Development Cycle:

  • Leads writing of model requirements in close collaboration with Actuarial stakeholders, including test cases and controls

  • Leads model stakeholder meetings to communicate recent developments and gather new requirements

  • Explores, determines and documents model design decisions

  • Executes and documents model development

  • Supports independent model validation and general sound model risk management principles, including model documentation and the assessment of the ongoing suitability of models

This role will become expert level in several Corporate Risk Models with respect to calculation methodologies, model limitations, and end user applications.

In the near term, the focus for this model developer will be MG-ALFA, as that continues to be our primary platform with continued development needs. As we continue to evaluate the AXIS platform for various lines of business, it is anticipated that the developer will have opportunities to contribute to AXIS model development.

JOB SUMMARY: May be involved in the following; the determination of pricing structure and premiums, the evaluation of new product ideas, the preparation, analysis and interpretation of product line financials, testing reserve adequacy, cash flow analysis, investment strategy, risk and capital management analysis, and/or other NF actuarial science and research for a segment or unit of a product group, business, or market segment. Regularly consults actuarial management on actuarial, mathematical, or risk management techniques in determining the appropriate courses of action. Will be proficiently performing and assisting in, and potentially leading a variety of Actuarial tasks which may include: data compilation and analysis, illustrations, model development, financial reporting and analysis, pricing, risk and reinsurance analysis, reserving/valuation and other duties as assigned.

LOCATION: Nationwide Financial

RELATIONSHIP: Reports to Actuarial Director, or other actuarial management.

DIRECT REPORTS: May direct and train lower level actuarial/students.


  • Compiles, categorizes & analyzes data.

  • Leads in Illustrating/reproposals for products and testing illustration software.

  • Builds, maintains, runs, and analyzes actuarial Models, using good knowledge of actuarial projection and/or valuation models such that the models can be optimized to support multiple applications.

  • Performs financial reporting & analysis.

  • Performs pricing of products.

  • Performs the analysis of risks for lines of business.

  • Establishes and understands reserves using in-depth knowledge and application of statutory, GAAP, and tax valuation standards for products.

  • Analyzes reinsurance opportunities and recommends solutions.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Education: Undergraduate degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or similar background requiring modeling, programming, or quantitative analysis.

Designations/Certifications: Generally FSA required (exceptions may be made for ASAs with significant experience and significant responsibility). PLEASE REFER TO THE NATIONWIDE LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY ACTUARIAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

Experience: At least six years of Actuarial experience and Actuarial Council approval.

Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of actuarial business functions, statistical methods of analysis, company actuarial systems and databases, and their integration; technical facility with leading computer tools and technology. Knowledgeable of actuarial viewpoint in a wide variety of actuarial subjects, and in Company, Industry, and Regulatory practices. Knowledgeable and comfortable with company operations, products, systems and actuarial methodologies.

Skills/Competencies: Master/Expert in Microsoft Office products (including VBA within Access and Excel), programming languages and Actuarial models. Basic level of organizational agility, command skills, strategic agility, and motivating others. Proficient level of delegation, perspective, dealing with ambiguity, customer focus, drive for results, business perspective, and accounting. Mastery level of problem solving, learning on the fly, analysis, and leveraging system capabilities.
