IPS-Annuities Financial Reporting & Analysis Team

An associate in this position contributes on both an individual basis and in a team environment, and manages up to 3 associates. The person should enjoy working within actuarial and with other departments. The work will be primarily focused on these projects described below.


This position will oversee the execution of quarterly forecast projections. Responsibilities include:

  • Running and/or reviewing the forecast projections, during quarter-end, for all the annuity lines of business.

  • Running and/or reviewing model changes/enhancements prior to quarter-end to understand and explain the impact to results.

  • Supporting the development and execution of all materials supporting the reporting of forecast results; including assisting with preparing presentations for senior leaders of the organization.

  • Assisting with maintenance of data and other inputs to forecast, as needed.

  • Managing, documenting, and rationalizing simplifications and topside adjustments to forecast projections.

  • Maintaining automated, transparent, and quick end-to-end processes.

  • Support conversion to Axis; defining requirements, testing new processes, communicating impacts.

  • Ensuring process documentation remains up-to-date.

  • Collaborating with the Valuation, Pricing, and other teams to better understand the inputs to the forecast and the drivers of forecast results.

  • Collaborating with Financial Reporting team to ensure consistency between actuals and forecast projections.

Profitability Analysis

This position will oversee the execution of routine profitability analysis. Responsibilities include:

  • Running and/or reviewing model projections on new business and inforce profitability for all annuity lines of business.

  • Connecting trends in profitability to forecast results.

  • Running and/or reviewing model changes/enhancements throughout the year to understand and explain the impact to profitability metrics.

  • Developing and maintaining dashboards that report on profitability on a routine basis.

  • Maintaining automated, transparent, and quick end-to-end processes.

  • Ensuring process documentation remains up-to-date.

  • Collaborating with Product Management team to ensure trends in profitability are accounted for in business actions.Collaborating with Pricing team to understand and incorporate new products as well as maintain a feedback loop on product performance.

Financial Reporting

Secondary responsibilities of this role may include assisting with financial reporting. Responsibilities include:

  • Monthly, may assist with the completion and/or review of several reporting tasks, possibly including liability estimates, summaries, dashboards, and/or other internal reports.

  • In addition to the monthly duties, each quarter and year-end may also assist with income statements and financial reporting.

Ideal candidates should have the following skills and strengths:

  • ALFA and/or Axis skills including ability to research code issues.

  • Database programming and spreadsheet skills including macros and VBA coding.

  • Communication skills both within and outside of work team.

  • Annuity knowledge preferred (VA, FIA, FA, IA).

  • Desire to learn annuity products and complex calculations.

  • SQL skills preferred.

JOB SUMMARY: Coordinates, prepares, and performs actuarial analyses to assist in the development of most complex actuarial formulations leading to recommendations. Provides consultation and clarification on most complex actuarial models and risk issues. Maintains documentation of actuarial analysis, and may assist in preparing the actuarial portion of financial reports and tax returns, and responses to insurance regulators. Employee is well adept with various actuarial techniques and procedures and performing most complex actuarial tasks which are of a mathematical and quantitative nature. In addition, associate is capable of working independently under general supervision, may work on teams with non-actuarial personnel. Will be proficient in performing a variety of Actuarial tasks most difficult in nature which may include: data compilation and analysis, illustrations, model development, financial reporting and analysis, pricing, risk and reinsurance analysis, reserving/valuation and other duties as assigned.

RELATIONSHIP: Reports to Actuarial Director, or other actuarial management.

DIRECT REPORTS: May direct and train lower level actuarial management.


  • Performs the compilation, categorization, and analysis of data.

  • Performs the illustration of products.

  • Performs the building maintenance, running and analysis of Actuarial Models.

  • Performs the financial reporting and analysis of results.

  • Performs the pricing and filing of products.

  • Performs the analysis and management of risks for lines of business.

  • Performs the establishment, understanding and application of reserves, statutory, GAPP, and tax valuation standards for products.

  • Performs the analysis of reinsurance opportunities.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Education: Undergraduate degree in Actuarial Science, mathematics, Statistics, or similar background requiring modeling, programming, or quantitative analysis.


Experience: At least four years of Actuarial experience and Actuarial Council approval.

Knowledge: Requires knowledge of actuarial business functions, statistical methods of analysis, company actuarial systems and databases, and their integration; technical facility with leading computer tools and technology. Knowledgeable of company operations, products, systems, and actuarial methodologies.

Skills/Competencies: Proficient or able to lead in Microsoft Office products (including VBA within Access and Excel), programming languages and Actuarial models. Basic level of command skills, strategic agility, business perspective, and accounting. Proficient level of delegation, motivating others perspective, dealing with ambiguity, customer focus, and drive for results. Mastery level of problem solving, learning on the fly, and leveraging system capabilities.
