JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for completing a wide variety of actuarial assignments in compliance with the Society of Actuaries Standards of Practice. Develops the basis for, and analyzes advanced actuarial studies for health or group insurance. Leads projects and mentors actuarial staff.

Job Description

RELATIONSHIP: Reports to Senior Actuary or Director. May have up to 3 direct reports.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Retrieves and manipulates the most complex actuarial related data using various sources/systems. Integrates new variables in the current processes.

  2. Lead projects related to the pricing and profitability of either the Program Products (College Accident and Health, Stop Loss, International Travel Medical, Trip Cancellation, Limited Medical, Mini-Medical, Sports & Leisure) or the WorkPlace products (Life, AD&D, Dental, Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability, Vision).

  3. Develops the basis for and analyzes advanced actuarial studies for health or group insurance (e.g. morbidity, mortality, lapses, expenses, financial results, selection, secular trends, claims utilization, cost factors and reserve adequacy) to determine premiums, rates, coverages, reserves, dividends, policy values, financial statement liabilities.

  4. Works in conjunction with other departments in response to changing market conditions and net market opportunities.

  5. Drafts, reviews and files policy forms and rate manuals. Partners with compliance team in state filings.

  6. Prepares actuarial sections of the Annual Statements and interprets current experience and trends for operating departments.

  7. Leads special projects. Acts as mentor to actuarial staff; partners with actuarial management to develop actuarial skills in students and staff.

  8. Provides consultation of data to various audiences; able to communicate technical data to audiences with various levels of understanding.

  9. Develops personal work schedule to ensure timely completion of assigned tasks; coordinates with others when tasks involve others.

  10. Takes ownership of assigned task in order to drive them to completion.

  11. Oversees peer tech reviews.

  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Undergraduate degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or similar background requiring modeling, programming, or quantitative analysis.

Experience: Typically, four or more years actuarial work experience, supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge: Knowledge of advanced mathematics and statistical concepts. Sound knowledge of actuarial methods/concepts, insurance terminology and products; familiarity with legal requirements for product. Must display command of procedures and methodologies employed in area of assignment.

Skills/Competencies: Demonstrated work product accuracy. Effective oral/written communication skills; Demonstrated ability to comprehend actuarial concepts and other advanced statistical concepts; Demonstrated ability to think logically and perform actuarial methods in a timely manner. Ability to effectively operate personal computer and related spreadsheets and data base software. Leadership ability when functioning in a management role. Ability to develop, motivate and influence others.
