Nationwide has an exciting opportunity for a high performing candidate to influence the strategic direction of a Fortune 100 company as an Assistant Vice President in Nationwide’s Enterprise Corporate Strategy team. This role will lead a high performing team to help Nationwide’s executive leadership tackle the toughest issues the company is facing today, and provide Board of Director level input on key initiatives underway to transform our company for our next chapter. The ideal candidate will display exceptional analytical, communications, teamwork, and leadership skills, have a breadth of consulting experience and exhibit executive presence, and be able to lead fast paced consulting engagements for executives across the enterprise. It will provide high exposure to top transformation initiatives and high impact to the top and bottom line.

Manages complex strategic projects at the direction of specific business unit leadership teams or the CEO. Role oversees the establishment of company objectives, the development of company long range and strategic plans, the identification of company strengths and weaknesses, and business opportunities through thought leadership, collaboration and professional expertise.

Job Description

Reports To: VP, Strategic Planning.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Partners with business leaders and department heads to identify, evaluate and determine business development and growth opportunities.

  2. Manages strategic projects for OCEO and the Management Committee, or business unit leadership team. Develops strategic.

  3. Reports and presentations for the Management Committee, CEO and business units on strategic planning and business ventures and opportunities.

  4. Facilitates and manages project teams at the corporate and business level.

  5. Conducts special studies for top management in areas such as the company’s operational activeness, growth opportunities, etc.

  6. Establishes and implements mechanisms to actively transition strategic recommendations into business unit operational pla.

  7. Advises and oversees the corporate or business level strategic planning process, which produces a three year corporate and/or business unit strategic plan tied to financial implications.

  8. Interprets financial and statistical data and identifies new products and services to support strategic plans. Oversees the evaluation of financial plans and policies in corporate planning and risk management or at the business unit level.

  9. Oversees the consultation, preparation and communication of evaluation findings and recommendations to all levels of management, including the Board of Directors, OCEO, Strategy Leadership Team and business unit leadership teams.

  10. Creates plans for new company ventures.

  11. Makes presentations and provides strategic consultation to executive management, including business unit leadership teams. Participates and serves as an expert in internal discussions on strategic planning methodology, competitor analysis, operational effectiveness, and capacity utilization. Establishes and maintains external relationships with other industry experts and thought leaders to facilitate internal innovation and strategic thinking.

  12. Engages in continuous improvement of the department, self and others. Actively develops associates in problem solving and communication skills and other areas of thought leadership, collaboration and professional expertise.

Breadth Across Enterprise:

Working with business and executive leadership, identifies, structures, and resolves complex strategic issues in support of the Board of Directors, Office of the Chief Executive Officer (OCEO) and/or business unit leadership teams.

Financial Responsibility and Scope:

Input and support only. Budget for Office of Corporate Strategy is done at the total group level, not at the level of this AVP role.

Leadership Accountability:

Developing Strategy: Partner at OCEO, SVP, or VP level in the development of strategy

Providing Input on Strategic Direction Facilitate or advise on components of the enterprise, business unit, function, or ELT council strategy.

Executing Strategy: Through tools such as strategy communications and metrics development and review, support strategy execution.

Team Composition:

May or may not have direct reports. Leads teams from 2 to 15 people.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education/Certification/Licenses: Demonstrated academic success. MBA or equivalent is preferred. Proven knowledge of strategic planning, project management tools, concepts, and methodologies.

Experience/Skills: Significant leadership experience with strategic projects, from either a top tier consulting firm or a fortune 100 strategic planning group. Demonstrated ability to leverage business and industry knowledge. Working knowledge of the insurance industry is nice to have.

Skills: Must have excellent problem solving skills including the ability to structure problems, identify core issues, articulate problem statements, lead problem solving discussions, and dis aggregate issues into discrete work streams that result in solutions.

Demonstrated competency in clearly communicating thoughts, ideas, and concepts both verbally in individual and group settings and in writing. Must demonstrate ability to provide actionable advice/solutions to stakeholders and business partners and builds effective partnerships with business partners ensuring priorities are aligned. Demonstrated competency in utilization of approaches/tools customary to strategy professionals and demonstrates key areas of effective project management such as scope definition, time management, cost analysis, human resources management, risk assessment and management. Must be able to work and manage large, complex projects. Ability to lead and develop engaged high performing project teams.
