The Senior Consultant, Market Intelligence will be responsible for building and leading a market intelligence strategy within Nationwide Retirement Plans. This includes building an infrastructure that facilitates the collection and synthesis of information from both inside and outside of Nationwide, the creation of a Market Intelligence Unit that has full-time market intelligence responsibilities, and the leadership of a virtual Market Intelligence Network with representation across the business. The role will have a cross-functional scope, delivering actionable insights to Marketing, Product Development, Distribution, Finance, Operations, and IT for the purpose of driving strategic decisions in Nationwide's $140 billion public and private sector retirement plans business. Particular attention will be paid to delivering insights that help Nationwide differentiate itself to profitably win and retain plans in the hyper-competitive $16.8 trillion retirement plans industry.

Strategically, this role will lead the organization in building a Retirement Plans culture that prioritizes being aware of what's going on around it, and making strategic decisions based on market facts and insights. It will assess the market intelligence needs of the organization in context of our current and future competitive environment. It will identify gaps that must be addressed in order to build a best-in-class market intelligence capability, then build and gain alignment around recommendations for how market intelligence should be holistically executed. The role will then operationalize recommendations, ultimately resulting in a market intelligence strategy that delivers actionable insights to the business in order to protect margin, differentiate from competition to win and retain plans, and make better strategic decisions. The role will also have heavy infrastructure and communication components, enabling market intelligence to be gathered, synthesized, and transformed into insights in a sustainable, repeatable way.

A well-qualified candidate will come into the role with extensive experience building and/or enhancing the market intelligence capabilities of large, complex organizations. Excellent oral and written communication skills are a must, as well as demonstrated ability to build relationship networks inside a company and across key industry partnerships. Deep subject matter expertise in the retirement plans industry is also strongly preferred, though not required.

Manages a function as an individual contributor, including regional, zone, or company-wide scope. May lead construction and validation of Competitive Intelligence tools and reporting to enhance rating, segmentation, sales, market, and/or underwriting. Identifies, evaluates and documents new Competitive Intelligence information to support business partners and research projects. Accesses a variety of data sources and performs complex analyses. Partners with enterprise resources including Market Research, Marketing Analytics and Customer Analytics to obtain market, industry and consumer insights relative to business unit. Operates autonomously under minimal guidance and supervision.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains high-level knowledge of competitive markets where the company operates. Utilizes this knowledge to guide the creation of market-specific reports to aid business partners with strategic decisions. May make market or product-specific recommendations and/or provide supplemental analysis on business development opportunities.

  • Monitors and communicates industry and product trends. Makes recommendations to business partners as necessary.

  • Leads the production of competitive intelligence reporting which is utilized by business partners to determine market competitiveness, target markets, and target segments. Ensures timely and accurate delivery.

  • Manages relationships with key stakeholders to identify needs. Leads the development and implementation of updated and new competitive intelligence tools, processes, and reports.

  • Leads ad-hoc reporting and special projects requested by business partners. Provides leadership on organizational competitive intelligence needs.

  • Responsible for timely and relevant communication to executives, and business partners. Makes strategic, project, staffing, technology, and budgetary recommendations to senior management.

  • Maintains the Competitive Intelligence strategy for an assigned business unit within Nationwide Financial (NF); integrates & encourages Competitive Intelligence principles across NF and the Nationwide Enterprise, ensuring its place as a core competency.

  • Develops and maintains a professional relationship with all business partners and vendors. Is a constant ambassador of Competitive Intelligence, always striving to provide excellent service to meet the needs of customers. Seeks out new relationships as necessary.

  • May lead Competitive Intelligence Technology and/or comparative rating technology and hardware. Leads the continued improvement of Competitive Intelligence's technology footprint through technology market research and frequent contact with relevant vendors.

  • Makes presentations to various audiences, including business partners, executives, corporate affiliates, and industry partners, and customers. Seeks out opportunities to share Competitive Intelligence strategy, developments, tools, and output.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Bachelor’s degree (preferred) in business, finance, mathematics, statistics, economics, management information systems or related field with a strong quantitative orientation. FINRA Series 6 license required within 180 days of hire. Additional licenses/registrations may be required when new products and services are implemented.

Knowledge: Extensive, solid knowledge of mathematics, statistics, probability, and/or principles of finance or insurance, proven analytical skills and proven knowledge of financial services concepts and competitive landscape in area of assignment. (distribution structures, competitive players, pricing dynamics, and third party intermediaries, etc.). Demonstrated leadership ability preferred.

Experience: Minimum ten years experience in a business unit (e.g., pricing, actuarial, product, sales) or combined experience and educational equivalent.

Skills: Demonstrated work product accuracy and timeliness. Effective verbal/written communication skills; Demonstrated ability to comprehend and analyze competitive intelligence data; Demonstrated ability to think logically and make observations or recommendations to business partners based on data. Ability to effectively operate a personal computer and database software, which may include SAS, SQL, or other applications.
