JOB SUMMARY: Provides the highest level of administration and professional assistance and support to the legal staff in the development, research, management and resolution of legal issues involving their respective business units. Prepares and drafts complex legal documents, agreements and pleadings related to litigation and non-litigation matters. Works independently and with substantial latitude for un-reviewed actions or decisions.

Addendum – Discovery Management Unit, Paralegal Specialist

The successful candidate will be organized, self-driven and exhibit a desire and ability to multi-task. A strong understanding of the stages of litigation and ability to evaluate and prioritize work and multiple projects are critical skills. Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal, investigatory, analytical and communication skills.

Compiles, reviews and analyzes documents and electronically stored information to investigate or respond to discovery requests, subpoenas or other matters Conducts legal, factual or other research of assigned issues and compiles findings in executive summaries or memos Communicates, corresponds and interacts with internal partners and outside entities, such as, attorneys, business partners, government entities, witnesses, vendors, companies and outside law firms Serves as factual resource on cases and demonstrates knowledge of case documents Drafts responses to third party subpoenas and government inquiries for review by the Discovery Management Unit attorneys Evaluates subpoenas and requests for information from third parties seeking corporate information to determine proper service, scope and takes steps to appropriately redact confidential, proprietary and privileged information prior to production Collaborates with team members to identify, preserve and collect potentially relevant information that is responsive to discovery Reviews pleadings and assists with the drafting and execution of legal holds and all aspects of governance for legal holds Partners with eDiscovery review teams to train review teams, conduct ESI review, perform quality assurance, reporting and production Essential Qualities and Capabilities: Collaborates effectively and professionally with clients and all levels of personnel, including attorneys, coworkers and administrators Owns professional development by seeking out feedback and learning new skills Possesses strong oral and written communication skills Must be a proactive, self-starter who understands the details within a larger context Must be flexible to respond quickly and positively to shifting demands and opportunities Able to work under tight deadlines, handle multiple, detailed tasks simultaneously and prioritize appropriately Must be able to anticipate problems and issues and exercise independent judgment to make sound, justifiable decisions Must demonstrate the ability to act to solve problems while also knowing when and to whom to escalate issues Must deliver high quality work product and have the ability to follow up and follow through Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as a with teams, in a fast-paced environment Able to work effectively in a culturally and educationally diverse environment Must take ownership of deliverables and be accountable Experience working with discovery technology and review platforms or the ability and desire to learn Strong understanding of the EDRM and the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Proficient in MS Office software including MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and SharePoint

Job Description

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Counsel/Paralegal Supervisor; typically no direct reports but may have a paralegal reporting to this position; may serve in a team lead capacity.


  1. Provides the highest level of legal support services to attorneys and counsel in the form of legal research, drafting of legal and business communications, and document preparation for trial. Requires little supervision in the execution of assigned tasks.

  2. Conducts the broadest and most complex and detailed legal research and compiles data from such references as on-line references, digests, practice manuals or other sources. Researches and provides analysis of statutes, regulations and court decisions. Prepares summaries of digests and recommends resolutions to legal questions. Prepares memos to internal and external contacts.

  3. Drafts contracts, patent applications, resolutions and other legal documents. Works with attorney on unusual matters. Drafts detailed deposition outlines/questions, motions, pleadings, subpoenas, orders and briefs.

  4. Conducts and supervises broad level assignments, necessitating the ability to evaluate matters which may have a major impact on the conduct of the company. May assist the attorney in executing moderate legal matters.

  5. Leads the analysis and evaluation of records and data for discovery. Drafts recommendations and correspondence to clients, claims attorneys, and customer with regard to discovery and legal matters.

  6. Develops and maintains internal information data bases. Creates new processes for data maintenance, storage and retrieval.

  7. Conducts and evaluates open and closed paralegal file audits and informs attorneys and management of the audit results; makes appropriate recommendations for improvement.

  8. Is an expert in both fundamental and advanced paralegal concepts, practices and procedures of particular field of specialization. Maintains currency in both business unit and legal professional competencies.

  9. Assists in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and precedents for the paralegal area.

  10. Serves as subject matter expert, coordinates workflow and mentors/trains lower level paralegals.

  11. Litigation -responds to requests for production o documents, response to interrogatories, and coordinates pre-trial proceedings and discovery.

  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Education:Undergraduate or post-graduate studies in business administration, insurance or other related area preferred.

Designations:Certification in paralegal studies preferred.

Experience:Typically eight or more years experience as paralegal with proven performance.

Knowledge:Advanced knowledge of paralegal, concepts, practices and procedures. Advanced knowledge of the operations, practices and procedures of general counsel or civil litigation. Proven knowledge of filing requirements of relevant courts and administrative agencies. Must have a demonstrated knowledge in legal research and complex deposition motion practices as well as appellate procedures.

Skills/ Competencies:Advanced analytical, research and organizational skills. Proven ability to set work priorities that conform with established standards and to be self-starter and work with limited direction. Capacity to manage complex projects with minimal supervision. Proven ability to provide leadership and support. Ability to give presentations in both formal and informal settings. Strong verbal and written skills for contact with associates, attorneys, clients and customers. Ability to operate a personal computer and related legal and business software and data based.

Staffing Exceptions:Staffing exceptions to the above minimum job requirements must be approved by the: Officer, Managing Counsel and Human Resources.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment, Occasional travel. Non-standard or extended work may be required based on project needs.
