JOB SUMMARY: Provides technical leadership and management for a commercial line of business or product. Responsible for developing, recommending, publishing, and upholding the underwriting guidelines and standards for the company. Ensures coordination between home office and field operations and has assigned leadership responsibilities for specified regional operations including financial analysis. Influences the strategies and projects that support multiple product related growth and profitability objectives.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to: Technical Director PC Staff.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leads the development and execution of activities for the assigned line of business, which support the company’s strategy, growth, and profitability objectives.
Leads research, analysis, coordination, development, and implementation of company-wide underwriting philosophies, procedures and guidelines of the most complex technical nature for specific line of business.
Recommends and administers levels of authority and guidelines for company on assigned line of business.
Conducts national analysis regarding performance, financial results, profitability, business mix, and competition and proactively identifies market trends, publishing insights, and understanding the market dynamics for the assigned line of business.
Provides technical leadership and support to regional underwriting operations including financial analysis for specifically assigned operations and line of business. Reviews, prepares, and presents a variety of reports detailing the status of revenue, losses, and expenses. Identities trends, highlights variances and recommends adjustments as they relate to financial targets.
Participated in training material development and performs audits of individual risks and for compliance with company guidelines, state regulations, and reinsurance for assigned line of business.
Synchronizes all related functional areas related to underwriting, training, loss control, claims, sales, product design, pricing, and management to enable consistent execution.
Investigates and assists in sponsoring new tools and technology to enhance product. Reviews and analyzes highly technical information, benchmarks competitors, and identifies ways to keep products competitive.
Serves on various committees, project teams and industry boards as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor's degree or post-graduate studies preferred.
Knowledge: Requires proven knowledge of property/casualty products, insurance company operations, field and staff functions, industry trends, and project management.
Certification/Designation: Relevant professional designation such as CPCU highly desirable.
Experience: Typically ten years property casualty lines underwriting, including at least five years of management experience. Exposure to both field and staff office operations preferred.
Skills: Demonstrated decision-making, strategic ability, communication will all levels of the organization, and leadership of projects. Excellent verbal and written communications necessary to effectively influence, present information, and communicate with management. Ability to drive for results, deal with ambiguity, solve problems, learn on the fly, make decisions, and also identify macro trends and patterns.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Occasional field travel may be required.

This position is preferred to reside in Des Moines, IA or Columbus, OH. This role will be responsible for and accountable for managing and executing the underwriting process for complex umbrella in standard commercial.
