JOB SUMMARY: Most senior level individual contributor role responsible for developing and recommending underwriting policies, procedures and standards to be implemented across all Commercial Underwriting. Supports the development and directs the implementation of strategies that support multiple product related profitability and growth objectives. Functions as highest technical subject matter expert for staff underwriting. Plans, executes and drives underwriting projects and initiatives that directly support profit, growth and/or expense efficiency. Lead technical resource to Underwriting team members providing advice and counsel on regulatory issues, specific risks, policy forms, underwriting appetite and guidelines, technical training initiatives, corporate commercial underwriting projects and agency relationships. Provides staff support for Underwriting personnel in the Region.

RELATIONSHIP: Reports to Staff Vice President or Assistant Vice President


  1. Leads research to develop/implement underwriting initiatives for technical area of responsibilities within Underwriting. Anticipates, understands and addresses the impact that underwriting projects and initiatives have on other teams (Services, Regional Underwriters, Product, IT, Data team, etc.). May independently perform research or lead a team of underwriters or cross functional teams in order to complete the project.

  2. Provides highly technical underwriting perspective to project teams, regional teams and other Staff teams. Utilizes experience, knowledge and skills to assess underwriting opportunities and make action oriented recommendations.

  3. Provides technical evaluation and recommended action for risks submitted by regional for Staff Underwriting consultation. Makes final recommendation relative to highly specialized/niche underwriting opportunities that are escalated from the regions. Makes recommendations for implementation of underwriting projects based on expertise and research.

  4. Responsible for various support functions such as product functional audits, training, vendor analysis, selection and management, employee career enhancement, competitive monitoring, systems, and liaison to other business units (systems, services, claims, pricing, distribution, marketing, etc.). To understand and drive critical thinking and technical underwriting via case studies and risk clinics.

  5. Consults with Regional Underwriting staff on new or highly specialized concepts, business or practice opportunities. This may involve assessment of the opportunity, risk exposure and decision to accept/reject business. The consulting is typically in situations where answers are unknown or a practice is not yet established within the company.

  6. Develops, maintains and utilizes key business relationships with other staff product, pricing, risk quality and loss control team members as well as regional underwriting leaders to strengthen the overall underwriting quality, accuracy and processes.

  7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education/Knowledge: Bachelor's degree or post-graduate studies preferred. Relevant professional designation such as CPCU highly desirable. Requires proven knowledge of property/casualty products, insurance company operations, field and staff functions, industry trends, and project management.

Experience: Typically ten years property casualty (personal and/or commercial) lines underwriting, including at least five years of management experience. Exposure to both field and staff office operations preferred Detailed knowledge of commercial lines insurance products, state regulations, underwriting policies and procedures, and best practices. Demonstrated knowledge of insurance contracts and forms to properly interpret and provide counsel to underwriting management and associates. Working knowledge of financials, trend analysis and competitor data to assist in effective territory management and counsel of underwriting team.

The candidate selected for this role with be a key member of Real Estate Vertical team. Will help build and execute the Real Estate Vertical strategy. Will support real estate practice group relationship engagement and management in coordination with field U/W. Provides insight and recommendations to refine and advance UW Strategy and Guidance for Real Estate portfolio.

Job responsibilities

  • Responsible for publishing the national technical underwriting guidance for Real Estate vertical including responsibility for deployment of national underwriting eligibility or application changes.

  • Leads key initiatives to support the Real Estate Strategy

  • Coordinate efforts with LOB teams for classes of business that fall within Real Estate purview. Primary emphasis on Property team alignment for COP and CPP offerings

  • Provide technical thought leadership and recommendations designed to address unique needs identified in the Real Estate Vertical space – via insured request, or broker identified gap.

  • Assists with book profile analysis, book management execution, and account audits.

  • Supports training curriculum development specific to Real Estate & Hospitality designated risks. Helps to deploy training material including occasional teaching / speaking engagements with underwriting and sales staff.

  • Help to refine and improve underwriter leveraged tools and resources: pricing guidance tools, underwriting bulletins, general underwriting guidance, regional nuances, peril-based considerations, etc.

  • Research and identify emerging trends that could impact industry vertical and performance of the portfolio. Work with leadership to develop plan of action to optimize outcome, and minimize adverse consequences.

  • Travel to meet with and cultivate / advance practice group relationships. Will likely focus on specific geographic portions of the country.

  • Manage referrals from field underwriting. National underwriting authority grants are afforded in this role. Coordinate with key LOB referral teams to provide field staff with underwriting decisions and direction on referral response.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Education / Knowledge: Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred. Industry designations such as CPCU, CIC, ARM highly desirable. Requires demonstrated knowledge of property / casualty products, insurance company operations, field and staff functions, industry trends, and project management.

Experience: Minimum 5 years (Consultant), 8 years (Sr. Consultant) necessary in commercial lines underwriting, product or complimentary capacity. Management experience a plus and field experience highly desired.

Knowledge: Property centric background in the mid-to-large commercial space is desired. Ability to interpret insurance contracts, understand the boundaries of coverage, and interpret risk transfer provisions and gaps / limitations is critical for this role. Competency interpreting and translating coverage terms and conditions, supporting pricing guidance, and understanding reinsurance provisions is necessary for this role.

Skills / Competencies: Associate must be able to communicate effectively, verbal and written, with fellow associates, officers, agents / brokers, customers, and field staff / leadership.
