JOB SUMMARY: Reviews new and renewal policies of the highest technical complexity and exposure to ensure underwriting quality consistent with company best practices. Under broad management direction, works with the highest authority limits, discretion, and initiative on assignments requiring high and extensive knowledge, skills and expertise. Ensures adherence to company underwriting guidelines and provides information regarding underwriting best practices and process recommendations to Underwriters, Managers, process owners and leadership. Provides technical advice to lower level associates and other functional areas.

Job Description

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Manager or Director: Typically no direct reports.

CORE JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs detailed review of insured operations and underwriting decisions, using internet tools, insured websites, applications submitted to the company, underwriting documentation, etc. Choose investigative techniques appropriate to each risk from many possible techniques.

  • Analyzes existing coverage, classes and exposure in detail, identifying key details necessary to make an informed underwriting decision. Reviews underwriting thought process to validate appropriate insight was developed and critical information was obtained to make the optimal decision on risk selection and pricing. Aggregates insight from regional audits or self audits to find trending that may exists locally or nationally. Responsible for ongoing analysis of line of business performance on behalf of Staff Risk Quality. Leads large multi-faceted analysis projects, responsible for coordinating completion of all required analysis.

  • Processes a heavy volume of detailed analysis requiring lengthy reviews and coordinates work appropriately to meet time and service standards.

  • Makes recommendations to underwriters and underwriting leadership for improvements in Underwriting policies, practices and procedures. Determines action items for broad improvement on a regional or national scale based on evaluation of trends in individual components of the underwriting process. Negotiates solutions and influences change to increase alignment of practice. May assist lower level associates with decision making challenges.

  • Plans completion of assignments to meet agreed upon timelines and service level agreements. May participate as part of a team to plan implementation of projects. Leads planning of moderate to large multi-faceted projects for the team or unit. Creates action plans based on evaluation and collaboration across all functions. Leads implementation of action plans.

  • Consults with underwriters and in regarding underwriting execution on individual accounts. Provides information to leadership and internal partners on line of business opportunities related to findings in Risk Quality reviews.

  • Communicates with regional underwriters on decision making process for individual accounts. May participate in verbal/written formal audit wrap-ups with senior leadership from regions. Provides input into messaging for department issues and communications and participates in presentations to leadership.

  • Strengthens internal and external relationships through regular contact on underwriting matters, promoting risk quality initiatives.

  • Proactively identifies and contacts partners regarding trends and issues that present concern. Responds to requests from underwriting staff with resolution within established time and service standards in order to facilitate and expedite service needs. Handles escalated underwriting issues from risk quality unit.

  • Educates internal and external partners on underwriting process, practice and tools. Helps train less experienced underwriting staff. Coordinates, participates and leads training development and delivery for large complex issues or initiatives requiring extensive research, evaluation and technical expertise. Identifies and communicates training needs and opportunities.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Completion of INS and/or AU or similar designations. Completion of CIC or CPCU is preferred.

Experience: Minimum of seven years of commercial lines underwriting experience with an agency territory assignment, working on larger, more complex accounts

Knowledge: Has an expert understanding of the business and commercial lines underwriting practices, especially on larger, more complex risks. Excellent working knowledge of organizational appetite and pricing acumen. Excellent working knowledge of company products, program guides underwriting standards and philosophy. Excellent working knowledge of company agency interface applications. Excellent working knowledge of state statutes and regulations pertaining to underwriting assignments.

Skills/Competencies: Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software. Excellent collaboration and presentation skills in individual or group settings. Ability to coach and mentor Staff Risk Quality team, guest auditors, and regional underwriters. Capable of influencing commercial underwriting leadership based on Risk Quality observations. Proficiency in conflict resolution. Capable of working as part of a team environment. Capable of leading people. Has the ability to accommodate and anticipate the broad spectrum of customers needs-both internally and externally.

JOB CONDITIONS:
