JOB SUMMARY: With minimal supervision, assesses moderate to high complexity risks. Responsible for providing services for a complex portfolio of accounts to influence the profitability and retention. Evaluates and documents hazards, exposures, controls and effectiveness of controls, according to department guidelines. Successfully manages assigned internal and external business partner relationships including underwriting, business development, claims and agencies.
Reports to: Manager. Does not have direct reports.
Conducts broad, in-depth and detailed research into account's background, industry and technical information as part of preparation for site visits, meetings, presentations and projects.
Conducts complex, comprehensive analysis of hazards, exposures, controls and the effectiveness of controls, for current members. Analyzes industry information, business or historical loss. Conducts special studies as requested, and communicates problem areas, trends and developments. Responds to special requests for information on unusual hazards, exposures or occupancies.
Completes assigned tasks based on established time and service standards. Balances workload with peers and ensures work is handled at the appropriate level.
Determines appropriate risk rating based on professional judgment combined with Nationwide guidelines. Identifies technically sound risk improvement solutions to help members manage risk. Creates and recommends service objectives based on the risk assessment and loss analysis and makes decisions as a subject matter expert (SME) when appropriate.
Plans completion of assessments and individual work assignments to meet agreed upon timelines. Coordinates meetings with internal and external business partners to discuss service opportunities and maximize relationships.
Maintains a consulting relationship with large numbers of members, business partners and agents and provides observations, solutions and follow-ups to issues with high levels of complexity to meet business needs. Functions as an ongoing resource and contact person with a high level of expertise.
Communicates risk evaluations and recommendations through technical reports. Determines appropriate method of proactive communication with internal and external business partners based on severity. Shares trends and best practices with peers through discussion and internal media platforms.
Works proactively to maintain strong working relationships with leadership, Claims business consultants, peers, etc., to share and gather information necessary to complete work. Engages current and prospective members and may make regularly scheduled visits to provide services that support members in meeting complex safety and risk management goals.
Builds and delivers more specific technical training in particular focus area(s) for business partners, peers and members. Plans personal development with direct supervisor and is accountable for personal progress.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor's degree in safety, science, engineering, fire science or business management preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: Prefer a minimum of one of the following designations, such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Director of Safety (CDS) and Associate of Risk Management (ARM).
Licenses: Associates must obtain the required Federal and/or state licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit. Additional licenses/registrations may be required when new products and services are implemented. If an associate fails, or is unable to obtain required licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit, the associate may be ineligible to continue in the position.
Experience: Six to eight years of commercial loss control or related experience preferred.
Knowledge: Advanced knowledge of safety and risk management practices and principles, including regulatory (OSHA, DOT, etc.) and national consensus codes (NFPA, etc.). Understanding of the commercial insurance business process and the fundamental role of loss control in that process. Knowledge of sales prospecting and business retention, as well as an understanding of applicable state and federal regulations.
Skills/Competencies: Advanced verbal and written communication skills to interact with all levels of internal and external contacts. Advanced technical skills. Must possess a desire to learn, grow and develop as a safety and risk management professional. Interpersonal skills to interact with leadership, internal business partners and peers. Ability to prioritize work/time. Ability to operate a personal computer and learn/use applicable systems.

Working Conditions: May require frequent and overnight travel. Must have a valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record. Must be able to conduct physical surveys inspections. Must be able to climb, stoop, bend, balance on various heights, crawl and lift up to 50 lbs. May require relocation. This is a field based position.

Nationwide Insurance is the 8th largest commercial carrier. Our Loss Control Services organization has over 170 Loss Control associates and technical staff. Our commercial portfolio of accounts consists of traditional, middle market and national accounts. Business segments include: contractors, manufacturing, real estate management, service industries, retailers, etc.
We are seeking a Loss Control Specialist with responsibilities for New England. The desired location for the person in this role to reside is Massachusetts or Connecticut. We are seeking a construction subject matter expert. The person in this role will handle construction accounts in addition to standard middle market commercial accounts.
Qualified candidates will have the following qualifications and experience:
Professional Certification, such as the CSP, CHST or construction industry certifications
5 years of construction loss control or construction safety experience
Have or obtain within 6 months an OSHA 500 Trainer Certification and can provide OSHA 10 & 30 Hour 1926 classes
In addition to the duties outlined in the corporate job description below, the qualified candidate will have the following responsibilities:
Conduct large loss reviews, develop best practices and technical bulletins
Utilize LCS Service Best Practices to manage a portfolio of construction service accounts
Work closely with the Construction Vertical LCS team, Underwriting, Business Development and Claims to assist in implementing strategies, obtaining new business, agency presentations and implementing the Account Stewardship Program
Provide coaching, training and technical consultations to LCS Associates, Underwriting and Claims
Analyze and identify loss trends in the construction segment and assist in the development of recommendations and programs to control loss producing exposures
Stay current with emerging industry technologies, new loss control services, work methods and trends in the construction industry through review of journal articles, studies and construction industry trade groups and associations
Continue education and obtain certifications applicable to the construction industry (e.g., CSP, CHST, CRIS)
Complete Special Projects as needed/requested
Assist in writing articles (2 per year) and the development of media for MyLossControlServices.com
Assist in the creation of job aids, training modules, and other technical resources
Actively participate in regularly scheduled meetings (teleconference, virtual, or in-person) as directed by the Sr. Consultants, Directors and the Construction Vertical team
Strong relationship, marketing and consulting skills required to interact with underwriting, agents, members, managers, third parties and team members. Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to operate a personal computer and other business equipment, prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
